Biased Judges on Proj Superstar
I am feeling very angry after watching the Male Finals of Proj Superstar (PS) just now.THe judges were super biased towards Junyang.. so much so that I am permanently in the anti-Junayang club now... the judges were the catalysts for this "allergic reaction".
(Sidetrack: another reason that I am starting to dislike junyang is that i feel that he can't accept criticism graciously.. and he is starting to come across as slightly arrogant and too full of himself)
Why do i say that the judges are biased?
Well, don't you get the feeling that they focused picking Junyang's good points but for weilian they mentioned very little abt his gd points. The most obvious biased judges were LFH and YPF.
Here's my take on their performance:
First Song
okay.. both weren't good...
Junyang:
The weak and off-pitch falsetto really killed his performance as his off key note was really obvious.
Also, his fast paced song was just like him singing the same song with a faster rhythm... i didn't feel any kick hearing him sing.
The music was at times covering his voice. He should have asked the musicians to tone down during rehearsals (as what a pro performer would have done).
Weilian:
I must agree that he sounded like he couldn't keep up with the tempo of the song.
His pitching wasn't stable at certain parts... but what i felt was that his off pitch notes were few and not obvious.. an untrained ear might not even have noticed he went off-pitch.
His voice was above the music. The judges failed to mention that he is no longer using very nasal voice. His voice placement has definitely improved greatly from the previous week.
Comparison:
Overall i think weilian did better just because his voice control is better.. and his voice sounded better too... brighter than that of junyang's. But the judges decided otherwise. But for this 1st round, i could still accept the scores the judges gave.
Second song
Both improved
Junyang:
Eh.. his diction was funny at times.
"disguised" i heard "distised".
I felt he chose the wrong song. His beginning was unstable.. sometimes sharp sometimes flat (the judges conveniently overlooked this point for junyang but pointed out that weilian was off-pitch ... even though both were "off-pitch" to similar degrees)
The song was so repetitive that towards the end i almost fell asleep because Junyang did not play much with dynamics (loud/soft).
Frankly speaking.. this is supposed to be a light-hearted piece.. but i felt nothing hearing him sing. (the judges said he's got the groove.. BIG DUH.. i didn't hear any.)
Weilian:
I developed goosebumps involuntarily when he sang his song... yes literally!! For me this is a good gauge of whether a performer is good.
I didn't like "Heaven Knows" previously.. but hearing Weilian's cover of this song propels this song to My Favourites list. His performance was sincere and touching. If he went off-key.. it wasn't THAT obvious (such that the judges have to mention for weilian but not for junyang).
His diction was great... much better than Junyang's. (needless to say.. i can't fathom why the judges thought his diction wasn't good... in any case.. they aren't qualified to comment on the contestants' diction since their area of experise is Mandarin)
He has stage presence.
In fact, i felt this was the best song performance among all the songs previously performed by all the contestants.
Comparison:
It was at this point i start to feel that the judges were biased. 'Cos Weilian was DEFINITELY better than Junyang for this segment.
Third song
Both didn't do that well
Junyang:
His pitching was again unstable at the beginning. Sometimes flat sometimes sharp... this was very obvious. (CONVENIENTLY.. this was overlooked by the judges)
His portrayal of the song was a happy one.. he looked and sounded happy. I don't know why t** h*** LFH thought it was touching... BIG DUH again....
He was very stiff.. and if you've noticed.. all throughout his 3 songs.. his expressions and gestures were ALL the same.. until it was super predictable -smile, punch the air in front of him, place his hand on his chest, wave at the crowd. I don't know again why t** h*** that LFH and FZH thought his gestures were expressive..
Weilian:
hmmnn... to be fair .. he sounded apprehensive when performing this song... but i felt the emotions were there in his performance... at least he didn't sound happy.
It was completely beyond me why the judges (esp YPF) said he did not put in his emotions... >.< ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, i would like to say that maybe the judges did not purposely set out to be biased. BUt as those who have studied Organisational Behaviour (OB: very basic study of the subconscious human minds) would know that people usually only see what they are looking for (or are expectingt to find). even though the event may not have happened for a fact I believe that subconsiously.. the judges are looking for Junyang's good points but looking for weilian's faults.. maybe cos they are already decided on who they wanna see as the first Superstar. Parting shot: All judges should be impartial. Practising favouritism is being unfair.
Disclaimer: i didn't have time to write a very "flowing" post nor check the grammar & the sentence structures etc.. if you find any mistakes.. please forgive me. very tired.. going to sleep.... zzZZZzzz

well, IMHO, tt is a reason y i expected junyang to advance to grand final, whether his performance is good or not. simply put, a visually-handicapped person wun hv much success in being a singer here in spore, n i suppose tt is y the judges r biased as they could see singing as a way to pull in revenue. $_$
sorry to say tt, but hv u ever seen a blind person successful as a singer? sad to say, the reality is harsh here.
i tink weilian had kinda expected he will be the next one to be eliminated tmw... he wasnt definitely happy (or is he?) towards the end...
maybe there is a miracle tmw, maybe the results werent biased even if the judges are.
i oso think the judges alrdy want jy to be at the indoor stadium... i thought junyang did HORRIBLE in the first song, showed his frustration obviously...not v pro cos practically frowning liao... while weilian wasn't that bad until towards the end where he lost it liao...
but thought jy was quite ok with most parts of the english song leh...at least i din notice his mistakes...and i din think that weilian sounded funny singing the english song...he wasn't as bad as the judges made him out to be so felt quite unfair...at this point it's v obvious the judges are just waiting for the junyang to 'recover' some of his old self so that they can start heaping praises on him again...
last song: forget it le...both so-so only...like u said jy looked happy singing tong hua which was pretty strange cos it doesn't quite go with the song...hmm
finally: i think from the beginning of superstar till now...jy is still a block of wood not matter how hard he tries to improve his tai2 feng1
i totally agree with you on the first song...Junyang totally couldn't hit the high pitch notes...i was even wondering why did he choose such a song in the first place....the fast pace part of the song was boring...it sounded monotone...ahaha....and yah...he was relatively soft...*shake head*
Weilian didn't do very well either in the first song....but i thought he was really pretty good in the 2nd song...he could hit the high pitch notes nicely and smoothly...the song did gan3 dong4 me...the judges are really biased coz i dun think he sang any worse than JY...
i think both didn't do well in the 3rd song too...when JY sang i thought he didn't put in enuff feelings into the song....coz the song didn't have much 'up and down' notes....so really gotta portray the song well or else it'll sound boring...yeah...i think JY makes the song sound boring...was pretty shocked when the judges said he has done well....aiyoh....and what he got his own style...i dun really hear that...he's a pretty good singer i admit...but the judges aren't being fair here...
as for weilian,..his 3rd song wasn't good too....but at least his voice is loud...sigh...
after all these....results tonight...i think JY might have get into the finals...
to mist: you are very wrong to say there isn't a blind person successful as a singer.. there actually is one world famous blind opera male singer.. one whom people from all over the world congregate just to hear him sing.. can't recall his full name.. but i think it's Antoine something. Although he may not be able to move freely around the stage.. still, his performance was incredible.. enough for people to spend big bucks just to hear AND SEE him perform live.
And.. who dictated that as long as there wasn't a precedent.. an event will never happen?? Dae Jang Geum was the FIRST imperial female physician.. and her contributions to TCM are still widely recognised and practiced.
Stef Sun and perhaps Kit Chan were Singapore's precedent(s) of S'pore singers who made it big in Taiwan.
THey paved the way for the other S'porean singers.
Weilian may just be the precedent of a successful VH singer in the chinese mkt.. he's got an endearing personality.. and the singing prowess to boot.
And it's a judge's responsibility to be impartial and give fair comments. The fact that they actually said junyang performed better when it really is weilian who did better really makes my blood boil.
ullo?
there are 2 famous blind singers
more so than Antione whoever
(I'm not great on opera)
u have definitely heard of them
one is the late Ray Charles
and the other is Stevie Wonder
ah june... but is there a successful blind singer in Asia? The West is more receptive than the East where handicap is concerned isnt it? pessimistic i may sound but most of the time, it is reality.
kit chan, stephanie, tanya etc r certainly successful singers but they r not handicapped to put it bluntly. There is a difference, n in this society, discrimination still exists, thru slightly better than in the past.
weilian may start the precedent but it is never easy. How long can he last if he ever win the title? in time to come, pple wld wan to c a singer tt is perfect esp here. His star may fade, and after few albums, pple may lose interest in him. who knows?
however i do hope pple wun forget weilian and still appreciate him for a long time, just like other sporean singers. a miracle happened last night - he advanced to the grand final; and i hope another miracle will happen - that is, he will be the first to start a precedent for the blind. ;)
with weilian n kelly in the grand final, it is going to be a tight competition... exciting. cant wait for the day to come haha.
Even if there is none in Asia.. he might just be the first.
I believe whoever is the first in anything will never find it easy... when stef was coming out.. she did say that the comperes there were rude to her.. 'cos she was a nobody then... who would have expected a nobody in singapore to make it big in Taiwan then?? though she made it later on nevertheless.
no doubt Weilian may find it hard.. and people in Asia may not be as receptive towards the handicapped... but doesn't weilian making it into the Grand finals mean something?? that people's attitudes are changing? i dun believe it is just "tong qing" that people are voting for him.. i believe it is his personality that people are enamoured with... Even if Weilian's not VH, i would still have voted for him.. 'cos he seems like a nicer person as junyang.. and i truly thinks he is a better singer.
In any case, as my friend said.. he is definitey more marketable than Junyang... because junyang is too "normal" and he doesn't have his own style. His singing is way too similar with Lin Jun Jie... even his improvisation sounds like JJ's. While similar.. JJ is definitely one up on Junyang.. 'cos he can move on stage, his voice is better... and JJ's songwriting skill is definitely greater than JY's too.
Anyway, me too am eagerly awaiting the Grand Finals.
did u noe tt junyang n JJ Lin r chums? they apparently knew each other way back in JC and r v close to each other like brothers... not surprising their singings r similiar haha...
also, did u noe tt weilian's votes are much greater (a large margin) than junyang's, and kelly's votes are double than xinhui's despite both elimated contestants had higher scores by judges? even so, for weilian's, the votes cast per person is low, n that means his fan base is much larger than other constestants.
frankly, my admiration for u grew by leaps n bounds ahahaha after ur this touching entry. u r (to me) the 1st person tt totally NEVER discrimiate... a pity u r a gal. ahahha...
the grand finals is a big prospect, esp with 2 best competitors so far in Superstar. and to tink i dun even hv a tix to go there watch it LIVE. sigh, otherwise we wld hv gone there hahaa. watching it LIVE is much better than watching it on TV. oh well...
n i hv to add this last part; weilian's goofy smile is v endearing ahahaa!
oh yea i do discriminate... but only aGainst the male species... hahahhaha
AHAHAHAH!!!
den shd i say i m fortunate tt i aint a man??! LOL
